Artist's Comments

Whether you want to call the giant square in this illustration the Monolith that was depicted in Arthur C Clarke's novel 2001. Or you may view the black square as the doorways that is written about in Stephen king novels of the Gunslinger like my wife does. I drew the black square with the monolith in mind. I leave it up to the viewer to think what ever they want.

I took one of my drawing from my art journal drawings and made it bigger and expanded upon it. One of the artists on Deviant [link] whom I admire a lot said that water reflections should reflect the same intensity as their surrounding, well in so many words he did anyway. So I took his advice and lo-and-behold he is right. It does look better.

Thanks Jeff.

Fantastic, fantastic job! I'm so jealous of your skill drawing waving grasses ... very nice!

Re: Your note to me --- I visited the DA web site of your young artist that you recommended and commented on both her art works and I am also watching her. It is always a pleasure to encourage young artists, and I think my art looked much like that when I was younger!

Thank you for both. I love encouraging young artists. Especially when I can encourage them away from all that Manga garbage that is being reproduced. And when I say "Manga Garbage" I am really hiding my disdain for the mainstream Manga that is being regurgitated as art now days.

I am actually quite pleased with this drawing. Its rare that I actually like my work, I always find some glaring defect that just annoys the shit out of me. But this drawing I am very pleased with this. Especially the galaxy on the right side that I experimented with while I was shading it in. It actually came out quite nice. I experimented with moon craters with this drawing. I am not very happy with my results. I should have stuck with my original formula that I stole from Will Eisner's work.

However over all I am very happy for once with this an illustration that I completed.

Oh one more thing. Thank you for the comments about the grass. I actually spent more time on the grass than anything else. I am glad that it shows. Showing depth while drawing long blades of grass is difficult. The only way it can be done is by adding different shades and smaller blades. At least this is true for me. So I created the illusion of depth by making shorter and smaller blades, but I also made the blades also lighter tones. That became difficult the closer to the hills I drew. It was hard to accomplish. I was glad when I completed it.

Looks good! I really like that nebula on the upper right, and once again you've arranged the shapes and values quite nicely. =) I'm glad to have been of some help.

I'm laughing nervously now cause some of my old stuff is manga/anime fanart. Though I don't think I'm gonna draw any more overt manga-style stuff, and I haven't wanted to for a long time! However, I definitely agree with you on the "garbage" aspect you mention.

The craters imply the planet has a thin atmosphere. If that were the case, then the trees and the distant blades of grass should be more crisp. I like how you use black shades in the foreground as well as the background

Of the two, this is my favourite, compositionally speaking it feels superior and well balanced with the hills in the background and the swooping shapes in the foreground. :)

This really is great, I love how you did the shading  And the grass looks awesome, real.
Did you use pencils? I admire your skills D:
