That black splatter thing is called Stippilism. I'm sure you're familiar with it. Depending how far away dots are spaced between each other will determine how dark of a tone for shading will be achieved. Also how many will determine that as well. So using the two of these contributing factors I created the shading. The only thing that I dislike about Stippilism is the fact that it takes so damned long to create shading effects. A serious long time to do it right.
For some reason I was thinking maybe you put something down first and splattered play paint with like a toothbrush or something. It turned out really nice looking. And very sporadic for something intentional. Does that make sense?
Yeah that makes sense. Stippilism looks sporadic which is why I like using that technique when I am shading with pens. However I dislike shading with pens because it does take so long. Pencils are easier to control the shading effects.

I'm a fan of pencil and pen shading... but I'm fond of making graphic and relatively flat images.
Maybe you can work with it if they evolve though.
You know? Continue on and make the lines more obvious and appear intentional.
