Description

This is Charles Carroll of Carrollton (September 19, 1737–November 14, 1832) was a lawyer and politician from Maryland who was a delegate to the Continental Congress and later a United States Senator. He was the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Mr. Carroll came to my because of something he said that I find very offensive.

“Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime & pure, [and] which denounces against the wicked eternal misery, and [which] insured to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.”

Charles Carroll was an educated man. That is why I was completely flummoxed to read that he made such postulations. I lack the academic background that Mr Carroll had. However I understand that republic, a society, cannot discover a system morality by adhering to antiquated system of theology that is bereft of ethical fortitude. I am talking about that which Mr Carroll was referring to, Christianity. A doctrine which was responsible for the suffering of women and the slaughter of 40.000 Muslims during the Crusades. The Bible, the supposed word of God, condones infanticide, genocide, rape, murder and slavery and that's just the Old Testament.

Anybody that is actively searching for a system in which to learn ethics and morality can find a lot better resources to gain such knowledge. Might suggest Socrates, Aristotle, or Plato. Hell you can read the history of ancient Greece and gain such knowledge. Anything is better than the Bible.
